Cristiano Ronaldo is without doubt one of the most loved footballers in the world and bowls people over wherever he goes. I’m sure you’re aware of the numerous stats and records Ronaldo has made and broken during his incredible career but how much do you know about Ronaldo the average citizen instead of Ronaldo the footballer?
#1 He was named after Ronald Reagan
Unlike his Brazilian namesake, Ronaldo was named after former U.S President Ronald Reagan. Ronaldo’s father Jose loved Reagan, who was an actor before he became a politician, and promptly named his son after him.
#2 He didn't want the number 7 shirt
The number 7 is synonymous with Ronaldo but did you know he originally didn’t want to wear the shirt for United due to the illustrious former players who wore it for the club? Sir Alex was confident Ronaldo would do the shirt justice and said: "We've had some fantastic No 7s, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, some wouldn't want that jersey but his confidence was high even at 18. When he made his debut as substitute against Bolton he took the place by storm." Ronaldo later said: "After I joined, the manager asked me what number I'd like. I said 28. But Ferguson said 'No, you're going to have No. 7,' and the famous shirt was an extra source of motivation. I was forced to live up to such an honour."
Arjen Robben may have been declared the world’s fastest player but CR7 isn’t bad either. He managed to defeat a Spanish sprinter Angel David Rodriguez in the zigzag spring challenge by half a minute and his free kick speed is approximately 13.1 km’s which is equal to a space shuttle when it’s launching.
#4 Ronaldo is a teetotaller
Ronaldo has always refrained from alcohol due to his father passing away at the young age of 52 due to alcoholism. The player says that alcohol reminds him of his father which is why he stays away from it.
#5 Ronaldo can jump higher than a Cheetah
Ronaldo can’t jump a from building to building in a single bound like Superman but he can jump higher than a Cheetah? When Ronaldo jumps, he generates 5G of G-force on take-off - this is five times the power of a cheetah in full flight. This allows him to reach heights of 44cm in the air from a standing start and 78cm with a run-up - 7cm more than the average NBA player. Amazing!
#6 He's a regular blood donor
Many people accuse Ronaldo of arrogance and while that’s partly true he also does a lot for the society. Did you know that the forward donates blood whenever he can? Ronaldo does not smoke or have tattoos on his body as those two things will affect his practice.
#7 He Sold His Golden Boot To Help a Charity
In November 2012, Ronaldo sold the golden boot he had won in 2011 for €1.5 million and gave the money to fund schools for children in Gaza. In December 2012, Ronaldo joined FIFA's '11 for Health' programme to raise awareness amongst kids of how to steer clear of conditions including drug addiction, HIV, malaria and obesity.
