Why £16million for Calum Chambers is a cracking piece of business by Arsenal

Arsenal announced their third signing of the summer with the shock transfer of Calum Chambers for £16million.

The youngster from Southampton can play right back, but what’s interesting about the move is that he’s also played one game at centre back. It’s believed he will act as fourth choice centre-back cover as Arsenal push to bring in another centre back should Thomas Vermaelen move on (which is not a certainty).
Chambers is another fantastic signing but doesn’t mark a shift in strategy. We’ve always spent big on young English talent if it’s available. I think Arsenal felt that waiting another season for him to develop at Southampton would increase his price to inflation busting Luke Shaw levels.
It’s a sound move. He can cover two positions, he’s fast, he’s tall and he has a big, big future ahead of him. Arsene Wenger is building a squad this summer. Alexis Sanchez was the major play, but Mathieu Debuchy was a replacement and David Ospina is back up with a view to being first choice if the questionable Wojciech Szczesny has another major dip in form this season.
Arsenal are still two players away from being an incredible side. We need a specialist anchorman midfielder type and I personally believe we need a better striker than Olivier Giroud. However, what is apparent is we’re in a far better position than we were last year. If our new fitness coach can keep our injured players fresh and on the pitch, we’re kicking our options on yet further.
This season could be very interesting. No one has stolen the summer with player purchases yet, but everyone has improved (bar Spurs). This could be a close fight yet again.
